Ramkumar Ramanathan progresses in Slovak Open; Leander Paes makes quarters in Knoxville

Ramkumar Ramanathan registered a comfortable 6-3, 7-5 victory over Spain’s Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol to advance to the second round at the ongoing Slovak Open on Wednesday. Meanwhile, veteran tennis ace, Leander Paes, sealed a spot in the quarter-final of the Knoxville Challenger yesterday.

Ramkumar Ramanathan made his way to the second round of the ongoing Slovak Open after he beat Spaniard, Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol on Tuesday. The Indian registered a comfortable 6-3, 7-5 win in the first round. Ramanathan, seeded sixth in the tournament, will go up against Germany’s Matthias Bachinger in the last-16.

In the doubles event, Ramkumar and his Belarusian partner, Andrei Vasilevski, defeated number two seeds Marcin Matkowski and Philipp Oswal in a three-set encounter. The Indo-Belarusian pair won by a scoreline 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 make the quarter-finals in Slovakia.

Meanwhile, Indian legend Leander Paes along with partner, Miguel Reyes-Varela beat South Africa’s Ruan Roelofse and Mexico’s Hans Hach Verdugo 6-4, 6-2 in the pre-quarters of the Knoxville Challenger.

Amongst the Indian women, Ankita Raina reached the second round of the ITF Futures (100,000 USD) event in Shenzhen after she knocked out China’s Fang Ying Xun by a 7-6(7), 6-3 win.
