Prajnesh Gunneswaran was still India’s biggest hope in the US Open despite Sumit Nagal playing the legendary Roger Federer in the other first-round match. However, the Indian top-ranked tennis player couldn’t do much either as he lost in straight sets to Russia’s Daniil Medvedev on Monday.

Coming straight from a title win at the Cincinnati Open, Medvedev was always the favourite in the match and also the man in form. And he showed he was not taking it easy in the very first game of the match when he broke Gunneswaran.

The experienced Indian, who is 88 in World rankings, did show grit to break the Russian World No. 5 in the fourth game to make it 2-2, but himself got broken in the immediate next game. Eventually, he lost the first set 4-6.

If the first set was slightly competitive, the second set was as one-sided as it could be. The Russian was seen breaking the Indian in the first, third and in the seventh game to win it 6-1. The third set was just a formality for Gunneswaran had mentally given up by then and eventually got broken twice this time, in the second and the eighth game. Medvedev would be taking on Hugo Dellien next.
