Prajnesh Gunneswaran enters ATP Top 100 rankings

Indian tennis ace Prajnesh Gunneswaran joined an elite group of individuals as he crossed the top 100 barrier in the recent men’s singles ATP rankings update. On the back of his consistent results across various foreign competitions, Gunneswaran jumped six places to the 97th spot in the global rankings.

In doing so, the Chennai local joined the likes of Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri to become only the third Indian men’s tennis player to enter the league. The left-hander, who had a brilliant 2018 season, reached the semifinals of the ATP Chennai Challenger last week to seal his entry into the upper tier of international tennis. If Gunneswaran can continue chipping in with some consistent performances, he will be ensured direct entry into Grand Slam events across the globe.

Apart from Gunneswaran, the other Indian who showed great promise in earlier on was Yuki Bhambri. The immensely talented lad has had his fair share of injury troubles that halted his progress. Every time he entered the top 100, it was followed by a long injury break. Bhambri is now placed at the 156th position behind compatriot Ramkumar Ramanathan, who rose to 128 with a jump of five places.

Amongst the WTA rankings, India’s Ankita Raina continues to be country’s top singles player at number 165 after climbing three places in the ladder and was followed by Karman Kaur Thandi who dropped a place to 211.
