The campaign of Indian tennis players in the men’s doubles category has come to an end in the first round of the Australian Open. The Indian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan lost its first game while Leander Paes and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan also went down with their respective partners.

The 15th seed all Indian dup of Bopanna and Sharan were defeated by the unseeded pair of Pablo Carreno Busta and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez from Spain by a margin of 1-6, 6-4, 5-7 in an hour and 46 minutes. The Spaniards were better than the Indian duo in many respects of the game apart from the number of winners where the Indian pair had 36 in comparison to 13 by the Spanish duo. The huge number of unforced errors committed by Bopanna-Sharan went against them and they had to exit the Grand Slam in the first round.

Indian tennis ace Leander Paes, who was playing with his Mexican partner Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela, also lost in his men's doubles Round of 64 match 5-7, 6-7(4) against the American-Australia duo of Austin Krajicek-Artem Sitak. Paes lost in straight sets to get knocked out of the tournament.

In another tie, India’s Jeevan, playing with Nicholas Monroe, lost 6-4, 6-7(8), 5-7 to Nikola Mektic and Kevin Krawietz from Germany and Croatia respectively in the first round of the Grand Slam as well. Jeevan-Monroe hit more winners than the opponents but the unforced errors cost them the first round game.
