Sumit Nagal goes up by six spots, achieves career-best ranking of 129

It was only last month that Nagal had attained his career-best ranking of 135 after he was seen jumping 26 spots, leapfrogging Ramkumar Ramanathan in the process. That was after Nagal won the title at the Buenos Aires ATP Challenger clay event in Argentina last month.

Since then, Nagal had yet another decently successful run at the ATP Challenger Campinas in Brazil last week. Starting with an easy first-round clash against Portugal’s Gastão Elias, who had to retire before the first set ended, Nagal showed his dominance over local Orlando Luz by winning the match 7-5, 6-3.

The Indian looked to be in the form of his life and in full control of his game when he defeated Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo in the quarterfinal. Though seeded seven ranks lower than Nagal, the Argentine posed a big threat and Nagal negotiated it well with a grueling 7-6, 7-5 win to enter the semis.

However, just when yet another title was in sight, Nagal went down against Juan Pablo Ficovich, yet another Argentine. And though the Indian was totally outplayed 6-4, 6-1 by the unseeded player, his winning streak has helped him to jump six spots up. Nagal would now be taking on Alejandro Tabilo at another Challenger event in Santo Domingo.
