World Wrestling Championship | India's disappointing run continues as Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat bow out

Day three at the World Wrestling Championship in Glasgow was as disappointing as the first day with India failing to open its account in the competition. Vinesh Phogat (48 kg), Sakshi Malik (60 kg), Navjot Kaur (69 kg), and Sheetal Tomar (53 kg) were in action today.

Vinesh Phogat started the day for India on a high defeating Ukraine's Oksana Livach 13-2 in her opening bout to provide India hope of a medal. However, Phogat was unable to overcome two-time junior world champ Victoria Anthony of the USA in the pre-quarters and bowed out of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Navjot Kaur followed the suit and defeated Korea's Hyebin Kim to move into the round of 16 before crashing out 5-10 against Mongolia's Ochirbat. Rio Olympics bronze medalist and one of India's most talented women wrestlers Sakshi Malik failed to break the deadlock and was defeated in the round of 16 by Germany's Luisa Niemesch 3-2. All the Indian wrestlers had the chance to battle it out for the bronze medal owing to the repechage rule that gives the defeated players a chance to compete if their victors reach the finals. But unfortunately, all the players that the women competed against lost their quarterfinals and the Indian grapplers eventually crashed out of the tournament.

Sheetal Tomar was the only women to reach the quarter finals of the tournament in the 53 kg category beating Australia's Lavesh 10-0 in the process. However, Sheetal was unable to capitalise on the opportunity and was defeated 2-4 by Romania's Estera Dobre ending another disappointing day for India.
