Sonam Malik bags second gold at the cadet world championships
India's Sonam Malik bagged her second gold medal as she defeated China's Xiang Binbin in the final of the 65kg category at the cadet World Championships at Sofia in Bulgaria. Earlier, the Indian wrestler also won the world title in 2017 in the 56 kg weight category in the same tournament.
The Indian wrestling contingent got off to a great start at the ongoing cadet World Championships at Sofia in Bulgaria. India captured their first gold at the competition as youngster Sonam Malik won the title in women’s wrestling on Thursday.
The 17-year old youngster, who earlier won the world title in 2017 in the 56kg weight category, bagged her second gold medal in the 65kg category. Prior to that, Malik won a bronze medal in the 65kg category at the world championships last year.
In the final, Sonam managed to fight off Xiang Binbin of China by scoring a four-point takedown in the second period for a 7-1 victory. Malik, who hails from Haryana, began the day with a 9-1 win over Khadija Jlassi of Tunisia before defeating Lillian Freitas of USA 7-1. She followed that up with a dominating win over European cadet champion Ekaterina Glukhareva of Russia.
Apart from her three medals at world championships, Sonam also has one silver and two bronze medal at the Asian stage.
