Dutee Chand qualifies for Rio Olympics in women’s 100m
Indian athlete Dutee Chand qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics on Saturday after she clocked a national record 11.30 seconds in the 100m heats at the G Kosanov Memorial Meet in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The qualifying mark for the quadrennial event in women’s 100m was set at 11.32 seconds.
In 2014, just before the Commonwealth Games, Dutee Chand was suspended from participating in any event after it was found that she had a higher level of testosterone than was permissible in a woman athlete, according to the IAAF hyperandrogenism laws. The 20-year-old fought her case and was cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) in 2015. Less than a year after returning to the track, the Odisha sprinter has crossed the qualifying mark for the Olympics to book a ticket for Rio.
Dutee clocked a timing of 11.30 seconds, a new national record, to qualify for the Olympics. After her performance, Dutee has vowed to perform even better and said that she will not let anyone down in the Olympics.
“I am really happy at the moment. It has been a tough year for me and I am so happy that my coach Ramesh sir’s and my hard work has paid off,” Dutee said, reported IANS.
“I would like to thank all the people in India who were praying for me to qualify. Your wishes have paid off. I would like to thank Anglian medal hunt, Pullela Gopichand Academy and KIIT university for the all their support. I will not let anyone down at the Olympics”, she added.
