After being dropped from the Asian Games contingent due to the failure in confirmatory trials, Annu Rani has finally qualified for the games owing to her performance in Railways Meet in Lucknow. Previously, she has not been able to clear the National Inter-state Championships as well.

Flunking the National Inter-state Championships in Guwahati in June as well as the confirmatory trials held by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on 15 August at NIS Patiala, Javelin thrower Annu Rani was dropped from the Asian Games contingent. However, after her good performance in the Railways Meet in Lucknow, she has been cleared by the body to go ahead and participate in the quadrennial event being held in Jakarta/Palembang.

Rani had won a bronze medal in 2014 edition of Asian Games at Incheon. However, Rani was not able to touch the 59m mark set as a standard for qualification in the confirmatory trials. She threw the spear below 58m and was dropped from the Asian Games team along with Monika Chaudhary, a 1500m runner on August 17.

On August 19, Rani went ahead to throw the spear at 58.17m to bag a gold medal at the All India Railways Athletics Championships in Lucknow. Rani will be having her event in Indonesia on 28th August.

“Since 58.17 metres was not that far below from 59 metres which is the qualifying standard, the AFI selection committee decided to clear Annu for the Asian Games. So she has reached Jakarta yesterday [on Thursday],” a source said.

Naveen Chikara who was told to appear for one more trial on August 21 has been dropped from the Asian Games contingent. His performance at the confirmatory trials held on August 15 was also not up to the mark according to AFI. Further, Tajinderpal Singh will be representing India in the finals of the Shot put event on Saturday.
