Asian Athletics Championships | Davinder Singh Kang to represent India in javelin throw

The bronze medallist from the 22nd edition of the Asian Championships, Kang, who was cleared of the doping charges on him by the Athletics Integrity Unit will now represent India in the next edition of the tournament in Doha. He has been named among the 43 athletes for the upcoming continental event which is scheduled to begin on April 21.

After his urine samples came positive, Kang was suspended provisionally in the year 2017. India had won one gold and one bronze in men’s javelin throw event in 2017 where Neeraj finished at the top of the podium with the 30-year-old Kang at the third place. However, after being cleared of the charges he failed to get past the qualifying standard of 80.75m set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). After finishing fifth in the Federation Cup, Kang won a gold in the National Javelin Thrown Open Championships on Tuesday.

Mohammed Afsal from Kerala has replaced the Asian Games winner Manjit Singh in the 800m race as the latter was not present at the trials due to an injury. Prachi replaced Jisna Mathew in the women’s 4x400m relay.

In the women’s steeplechase, Sudha Singh has found her name on the list released by the AFI in spite of missing the confirmatory trials. However, the sports ministry has not given clearance for her inclusion so far.

“The AFI has booked Sudha’s flight tickets for Doha and so has again requested the ministry to clear her,” a well-placed source told PTI.

Sanjivani Jadhav has been cleared by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after doping charges on her and will represent India in the women’s 10,000m race in Doha. 

The women’s 100m relay team of Dutee Chand, Hina, Archana Suseendran and K Ranga, which clocked 44.12 seconds in the confirmatory trials, have also travelled to Doha for the continental event to be held this month. The men’s 100m relay team has also made it to the final team announced by the AFI.
