Asian Championship bronze medalist Sanjivani Jhadav to serve two-year suspension

India’s long distance runner Sanjivani Jhadav has been handed a two-year suspension for first time doping violations. The Nasihk born has won a 10,000m bronze at Asian Championship 2019 and 5000m bronze in 2017 edition. 23-year-old Jhadav has been handed over the suspension by IAAF's Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for a doping violation.

The AIU on Thursday said that athlete admitted to her first violation, resulting in disqualification all past results since June 29, 2018. The suspension period also commenced from June 29, 2018. 

"The Athlete has accepted the above consequences for her antti-doping rule violations and has expressly waived her right to have those consequences determined by the Disciplinary Tribunal at a hearing," the AIU said. 

Jhadav failed the doping test in November 2018 during National Inter-State Athletics Championships, as Probenecid was found in her sample. Probenecid is used to control high uric acid levels in the blood that can be caused by some diuretics (therefore it could actually work against some potential and actual masking agents).

Her sample initially returned negative when tested at the National Dope Testing Laboratory in India, but was later found to contain the prohibited substance when tested at World Anti-Doping Agency's Montreal laboratory. 

Even though Jhadav admitted to the violation of doping rules, the India's National Anti-Doping body NADA has the right to appeal against the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.
