Kidambi Srikanth and Sameer Verma kicked off the campaign with comfortable wins against Russian Sergey Sirant and Spaniard Pablo Abian respectively. Men’s Doubles pair of Manu Atri and Sumeeth Reddy, however, were eliminated in the first round by Korean pair Chung Seok and Kim Dukyoung.

Srikanth was brimming with confidence as he took just 28 minutes to win the first-round match 21-13, 21-12 on Day 1 in Glasgow. Russia’s unseeded Sergey Sirant was hardly given any breathing space as the Indian shuttler took a 6-1 lead in the first game before winning the break 11-6.

The lead increased to 15-7 in no time and although Sirant did pull off some consecutive points, he was hardly a match for Srikanth who finished the first game 21-13. Though the second game wasn’t so one-sided with both exchanging points in the initial stages, Srikanth maintained a good six-point lead before sealing it 21-12.

Sameer was dominating his opponent 17-4 in the second game after winning the first one 21-8. A win was well within the sight when Spain’s Pablo Abian retired on medical grounds. The match lasted even shorter (27 minutes).

It was a bad day for the men’s doubles pair of Manu Atri and Sumeeth Reddy as they went down lost 20-22, 11-21 in the first round to Korean pair Chung Seok and Kim Dukyoung.

Tanvi Lad scripted a brilliant comeback to overcome England's Chloe Birch 17-21, 21-10, 21-19 in the first round of Women’s Singles. Following a first game loss, Tanvi changed her momentum winning the second round and forcing a tight decider, where she emerged victorious at the end.

Indo-Malaysian Mixed doubles pair of Prajakta Sawant and Yogendran Khrishnan had it tough against Chinese Taipei pair of Kai Hsin and Ching Yao as they won a tightly contested game 21-15, 13-21, 21-18, which lasted 49 minutes. The other Indian mixed doubles pair of Satwik Sairaj and K Maneesha saw off Hong Kong's Tam Hei and Ng Yau in a similarly hard-fought game where they won 24-22, 21-17 in 44 minutes.

In the last two years, when the Indian singles shuttlers have failed to live up to the expectations, surprisingly, one name has kept the flag flying high -- HS Prannoy. The WR-6 shuttler has won medals at almost all the major competitions and has an outside chance of winning medal at the Olympics.
