Indian boxer Vikas Krishan not to play semi-final as eye injury aggravates: Reports
In a major setback to Indian boxing, reports suggest that leading middleweight Vikas Krishnan has pulled out of the semi-final clash after his eye injury has worsened. A source from the boxing team informed that Krishnan, who suffered a nasty cut just above his left eye, will not play semis.
The gold-winner from 2010 edition of the Games suffered the blow after an accidental clash of heads in the first round of his quarter-final battle against Erbieke Tanglatihan of China. He won a split decision against the Chinese in the quarters but his eye was swelled up badly after the bout.
When he was asked about the semi-final game then, he had replied, “I really hope so.”
The boxing team’s doctor has marked the 26-year-old as unfit to fight against Kazakhstan’s Abilkhan Amankul, who now has received a direct entry to the finals. The other semi-final will be played between Eumir Felix Marcial of the Philippines or Israil Madrimov of Uzbekistan.
Vikas, with his entry into the semi-finals, ensured that he becomes the first Indian boxer to win three medals in Asian games. After a Gold in the lightweight category in Guangzhou in 2010, now he has bagged two back-to-back bronze medals in 2014 and 2018 editions.
