Indian boxer Vikas Krishan to make pro debut in US on January 18

Vikas Krishan was a standout performer for the Indian contingent at last year’s Gold Coast CWG and the Asian Games, which were held in Jakarta & Palembang. Krishan bagged gold in Australia defeating Zambia, Northern Ireland and Cameroon in the process. However, the youngster had to settle for a bronze in Indonesia as he was forced to withdraw from the competition because of a serious eye injury. However, having won gold in the 2010 edition of the tournament, Krishan became the first Indian to win three medals in the Asian showpiece.

Now, the young boxer from Haryana is all set to make his professional debut in the professional circuit as he gears up to face-off against America’s Steven Andrade in New York on January 18. The welterweight bout, is scheduled to be held at the Stone Resort Casino, will form the under-card of Olympic silver-medallist Shakur Stevenson's IBF Intercontinental and WBC Continental Americas featherweight title contest against Jessie Cris Rosales in a 10-round encounter, as conveyed by Vikas’ representative.

The Indian’s fight will be a six-round contest and will be his first outing in the pro circuit after signing up with legendary Bob Arum's Top Rank Promotions. His opponent, Andrade, has a 3-3 record in the pro circuit.

"I was an amateur for a very long time, and the time was finally right to turn pro," Vikas had stated after turning professional.

Vikas, who had revealed his intention of going pro in 2016, has been training with Stevenson's grandfather Wali Moses, as per media reports in the US. Vijender Singh, India's first and only Olympic medallist in boxing, is also a member of Top Rank Promotions after he impressed with an undefeated professional run in England and India. However, Singh’s debut in the United States is being planned for March later this year.
