IOC recommends suspending AIBA from Tokyo Olympics

In a major blow to the boxing federation, the IOC has recommended that there will be no rights to organise the sport for the AIBA during the next Olympic Games, reported AFP. This guidance has come from the executive board of the Olympic committee and is likely to be approved by the full IOC membership next month. The guidance has been put forth after a long investigation into the allegations regarding the mismanagement in the AIBA.

According to the IOC president, who spoke to the reporters in Lausanne, “the probe speaks for itself.”

He also mentioned that the evidence details “extremely serious issues” within the association ranging from “deficiencies” in governance to lack of due diligence and conflicts of interest.

In ousting AIBA from the Tokyo Games but creating a new path for boxers to compete, the IOC was seeking to ensure that athletes “can live their dream and participate in the Olympic Games” while making sure AIBA faced “the necessary consequences,” Bach said in a statement.

Audit firm Deloitte led the probe of the IOC and it was regarding various issues like finances, governance, ethics, anti-doping, refereeing and judging.

With the pugilists around the world waiting to take part in the sports extravaganza next year, Bach said, “there will be an Olympic tournament in Tokyo.”

Morinari Watanabe of the Japanese Olympic Committee will take care of a special task force to organise both the qualifiers and the Tokyo boxing competitions. The qualifications are scheduled to take place between January and May next year.
