Viswanathan Anand failed to finish strongly in the St. Louis Rapid and Blitz Chess tournament finishing in the 9th place in the standings. Levon Aronian, however, ended up winning the tournament followed by Sergey Karjakin and Hikaru Nakamura in second and third place respectively.

The Indian Grand Master finished his final phase of Saint Louis and Blitz Chess tournament on a bad note as he managed to win only two games in the tournament, one each in the rapid and blitz format. He finished ninth with 14 points, two behind eighth-placed Garry Kasparov.

Yesterday, Anand finished at 8th, and today opened the day with a win over Ian Nepomniachtchi which was his only victory in the 18-round blitz section. In the next two rounds, he registered losses against Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura before facing draws against Le Quang Liem, Aronian and Kasparov. Then he was defeated by Lienier Dominguez Perez before draws against last-man David Navara and Karjakin which resulted in ninth position for Anand.

Armenian player Levon Aronian scored 24.5 points from a maximum of 36, ahead of the runner-up duo of Sergey Karjakin and Hikaru Nakamura at 21.5.
