Can't play IPL and complain about too much cricket, Steve Waugh slams Aussies
Former Australian skipper Steve Waugh has lashed out at the Australian players for their complaints about excessive cricket despite playing in the IPL. He said that the current cricketers don’t play as much as the players of the yesteryear did and also have not been involved in domestic circuit.
Australia is scheduled to host Sri Lanka for a T-20 game before flying all the way to India for the first Test at Pune next morning. On the wake of it, several concerns have been raised about the excessive amount of cricket being played by the team.
However, former Australian skipper Steve Waugh has countered the complaints by saying that the current cricketers don’t do that much ard work as the players of the yesteryear had done.
"There can't be (too much cricket) because they choose to play in the Indian Premier League," he told Fairfax on Friday.
"There can't be too much cricket because they keep playing more. I looked at the schedules and I think they compared myself and Steve Smith and the previous captains on workload and we're playing the same amount of days,” he said.
He pointed out that current set of players also don’t participate in domestic and club cricket, which the former cricketers used to play in the past regularly.
"They don't play any (Sheffield) Shield cricket or club cricket - we used to play all that as well," he said. "Their's is probably more intense, more international cricket, but days played, we played as much and travelled as much and these days the hotels are better than when I first started playing."
