Hockey India (HI), on Saturday, lifted the ban they had imposed on Gurbaj Singh on charges of groupism and disrespectful behaviour brought against the midfielder by former India coach, Jude Felix. The Hockey India Athletics Grievances Redressal Committee (HIAGRC) arrived at the decision after a meeting with Gurbaj and Felix.

HI had  originally imposed the ban until May 2016, after former assistant coach Felix accused Gurbaj of being disrespectful towards National team coaches, in a report he submitted to the governing body after the 2015 Hockey World League. Felix, who resigned earlier this year, had also accused the midfielder of creating rifts within the team with groupism and politics.

Earlier this week, the Punjab and Haryana High Court rescinded the nine-month ban imposed by Hockey India on 27-year-old Gurbaj. The court asked the HIAGRC to review the punishment imposed on Gurbaj, which they believed was immoderate, within a week of receiving the court order.

The decision to lift the ban was taken by HI disciplinary committee headed by former International Harbinder Singh, following a meeting with Gurbaj and Felix. This has come as a big boost for the player as it opens the possibility of his return to the national team ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics.
