Indian women kicked off their Asia Cup campaign in magnificent fashion as they thrashed Singapore 10-0 in Kakamigahara on Saturday during the opening match of Pool A. India face China next, on Sunday, in the continental tournament, which also serves as a qualifier for 2018 Hockey World Cup.

India’s incessant attack throughout the game seemed too much for Singapore as the eves got over their disappointing 2017 Hockey World League Semi-Finals with a marvelous 10-0 win. Under new Head Coach Harendra Singh, the women fiercely attacked from the very start and won back-to-back penalty corners in the first quarter.

Despite Singapore goalkeeper Felissa Lai’s determined display between the post, India kept knocking on the door and their precisely practiced counter-attacks soon paid off when Navneet Kaur gave the side an early lead. The lead was doubled by Rani as India finished the first quarter with a 2-0 lead.

There was no stopping the women from there on as they added four more goals in the second quarter through Rani, Navjot Kaur, Lalremsiami and Deep Grace Ekka, as India went into the 10-minute half-time break with an imposing 6-0 lead.

The dominance continued in the third quarter with Navneet, Navjot, Gurjit Kaur and Sonka adding four more to end the game 10-0. While drag-flicker Gurjit scored with a fierce strike, Navjot scored a brilliant field goal. Though the final 15 minutes saw India win back-to-back penalty corners, Singapore’s defence didn’t let the Indians add to the humiliation.

India face a much tougher opponent in China next game on Sunday, who overcame Malaysia 5-4 in their opening game, which will be followed by Malaysia before they progress to the quarter-finals.
