Hockey round up | India men’s thrash Spain 6-1, eves make 2-1 comeback against Britain

It was a great day in the office for the Indian hockey fans as both the men’s and women’s side got their respective wins over strong opponents Spain and Great Britain. While Harmanpreet Singh was the star for the men’s side, it was Gurjit Kaur’s late heroics that saw her team making a comeback.

European runner-up Spain were playing a Test match against Indian on Saturday and despite being not at their best, they did well to keep the first quarter a stalemate. However, India notched up a gear in the second half with skipper Manpreet Singh opening the score in the 24th minute.

As soon as India got the first goal, they went all out resulting in Harmanpreet doubling the lead in the 28th minute from a penalty corner. However, Spain didn’t India run away with the quarter with Pau Quemada reducing the deficit to 1-2 in the very next minute.

But, India had the momentum on their side and Harmanpreet was at with again with a thunderous drag-flick to make it 3-1. India were in full control from there with Nilakanta making it 4-1 in the 39th minute from an open play while Mandeep added another in the 56th. As if the score wasn’t beyond doubt, Rupinderpal’s drag-flick completed the rout in the 60th minute with India sealing their biggest win over Spain.

The Indian eves were playing n Marlow and were trailing 0-1 when the hosts got the lead in the 46th minute through Emily Defrond. However, the visitors didn’t lose hope and created enormous pressure in the remaining few minutes and soon got the result in Sharmila Devi levelling the score.

However, just when the match looked to end as a draw, Gurjit converted from a short corner with only 48 seconds left on the clock thus completing India’s comeback.
