India atop Asian Shooting Championship leaderboard

The Indian team bagged six more medals on Sunday to leapfrog China to the top of the medals table with a total of 12 gold, 8 silver, 8 bronze at the Asian Shooting Championship in Kuwait City.

Mahendra Singh won silver in the men's 25m standard pistol event, with a score of 572, eventually losing to Korean Dae Kyu Jang who shot 581 points. The Indian held his composure in the last two rounds, while contender Oyun Tuguldur shot low scores of 92 and 94 to slip down.

India struck bronze in the men's 25m standard pistol team event, when Mahendra teamed up with Gurpreet Singh and Neeraj Kumar to shoot a total of 1676 points. Korean won the gold with a total of 1698 while China took the second spot with 1691.

On the women's side, the team of Lajja Gauswami, Anjum Moudgil and Elizabeth Susan Koshy won bronze with a total of 1734 to bag the women's 50m rifle 3 positions team event. China won gold with a score of 1749 while Korea won silver shooting a combined score of 1737.

Gauswami had earlier finished seventh in the individual event shooting 404.6 in the finals.

In the junior section, India's Achal Pratap bagged gold in the 25 m Standard Pistol Men's Junior event shooting 561, narrowly pipping Park Jungwoo of Korea.

Pratap also teamed up with Rituraj Singh and Shivam Shukla to win gold in the team event with 1669, as they ran up a comfortable margin of 14 points against second placed Korea.

On Friday, Heena Sidhu had bagged India's first gold, in a senior event, in the 2015 Asian Shooting Championship as she topped the women's 10m Air Rifle event, with a score of 195.8.
