Jitu Rai claims bronze in ISSF World Cup
2014 Asian Games gold medalist Jitu Rai secured a come-from-behind victory to clinch the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol event in the ongoing ISSF World Cup on Tuesday. Rai shot a total of 216.7 points in the eight-man final to secure the fourth medal for India in the marquee tournament.
Despite languishing at the seventh position after the end of the first competition series that included an 8.8, Rai made a stunning comeback in the second competition series with two 10.6 and a 10. He ended the second series at the sixth position with a total of 98.7 and shot two 10s in the following shots to continue his ascent in the ranks.
The Khel Ratna awardee needed to emulate his very best in the fourth series to ensure a Bronze medal and he did exactly that with aplomb by hitting two back-to-back 10.6 and a 9.9 to beat China's Zhanyi Xu (197.9) for the Bronze medal.
Japan's Tomoyuki Matsuda, with a world record total of 240.1 points, won a gold medal while Vietnam's Xuan Vinh Hoang claimed silver with 236.6 points.
The other Indian shooters in the air pistol event - Omkar Singh and Amanpreet Singh, had a bad day at the office and failed to cross the qualification stage of the tournament.
