Anjum Moudgil racks up five gold medals at National Shooting Championships

24-year old Anjum Moudgil has been a revelation in the past year with some promising displays across various global competitions. Moudgil, a sub-inspector with Punjab Police, has earned rave reviews for her performances on the field and has been touted as a future Olympic medalist as well.

She lived up to her expectations as the youngster bagged five gold medals at the recently concluded 62nd National Shooting Championship Competitions (rifle/pistol) at National Games Shooting Range, Vattiyurkavu in Thiruvananthapuram. After winning gold in the 50m 3-positions, 10m air rifle and 10m air rifle mixed event, Anjum finished with a with a score of 619.1 to retain her crown in the women's 50m rifle event. Chahat Deep Kaur (Punjab, 617.6), Tejaswini Sawant (Maharashtra, 617.1) were second and third. An inspiring performance from Moudgil, Chahat and Jasleen Kaur (609.5) also powered Punjab (1846.2) to team gold in the 50m rifle prone category.

"I'll be taking a break now and will be concentrating on my fitness. I want to be in top form till 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games and it's not easy to maintain the tempo. Even though I have won the Olympic quota in 10m air rifle event, it's not guaranteed (Olympic berth) as it rests on the federation. During the break I'll be working hard to correct small mistakes that's creeping during competitions, like the need to take rest in between the shots. I want to myself perfect by next majors and make myself counted for Tokyo. I want to be the first Indian (women) at the podium in Tokyo," Anjum told TOI.

The Punjab-born youngster will participate in four World Cups - New Delhi (Feb 20-28, Beijing (April 23-March 1), Munich (May 24-31), Rio de Janeiro (Aug 26-31) and one Asian Championship (Doha, Nov 3-11) in the coming season.
