Indian shooter Om Prakash Mitharval has bagged the gold medal in the 50m pistol event at the ongoing 52nd ISSF Shooting World Championship in Changwon, South Korea on Tuesday. The 23-year-old managed to score a total of 564 points to become the World Champion in the 50m pistol event.

Serbia’s Damir Mikec won the silver medal with a total of 562 points while Korea’s Daemyung Lee finished third with 560. As the event is no longer a part of the Olympic programme, the players do not get an entry into Tokyo 2020.

Mitharval started his campaign with 92 points in the first round and trailed the Korean by one point. Even after the second round both Lee and Mikec found themselves five and three points respectively ahead of the Indian shooter who managed to score only 90. However, that was the pressure that the Indian needed to unleash his best game and he came back strong in the remaining rounds scoring 97, 95, 96, and 94 respectively to win the title.

However, the Indian team, consisting of Mitharval, Jitu Rai and Manjit, could only manage a fifth place finish in the team event with a total score of 1648. Rai scored a total of 552 points while Manjit managed to gather only 532. Rai and Manjit finished at 17th and 56th respectively.

Meanwhile, in a major disappointment for the Indians, Manu Bhaker, Heena Sidhu, and Shweta Singh didn't make it to the finals of 10m Air Pistol event. While only to eight managed to get a qualification, Bhaker finished at the 13th position with 574 points while Sidhu and Shweta stayed at 29th and 45th position with 571 and 568 points respectively.
