Rio Olympic Games medal-winners on Day 3 : USA still atop medal table while Brazil win first gold

After the finishing the second day with 3 golds, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals, the United States won seven more medals on day 3, including two golds, to continue at the top of the medal table. Ryan Murphy continued the nation’s gold-medal winning streak in the men’s 100m backstroke event, which dates back to 1996 Atlanta Olympics, by finishing 51.96 seconds with an Olympic record. In the women’s 100m breaststroke, Lilly King won the gold in an Olympic record time of 1:04.93 to take the gold.

The host nation, Brazil, also won their first gold of the Games yesterday, with judoka Rafaela Silva winning the title in the women’s 57kg category. Rafaela, who was disqualified in the early rounds at 2012 London Olympics for a rule violation, defeated world number one Sumiya Dorjsuren of Mongolia by Waza-ari to claim the gold.

China also won two gold medals on the day to tie USA with 5 golds. Swimmer Sun Yang in the men’s 200m freestyle and duo of Chen Aisen-Lin Yue in the men's 10-metre synchronised event in diving won the gold medals for the nation on the third day.

In tennis, Serbian Novak Djokovic, who crashed out in the men’s singles yesterday, and his partner Nenad Zimonjic exited in the second round of the men’s doubles after losing to Brazilian pair Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares in straight-sets.

In archery World No.1 Kim Woojin, who created a world record in the ranking round last Friday, crashed out of the men’s individual event yesterday after losing his Round of 32 match. Indonesia’s Riau Ega Agatha orchestrated the biggest shock of the day and dispatched the World No.1 6-2 to move into the next round.
