Paris to host 2024 Olympics after Los Angeles settles for 2028 Games

Last month, IOC members supported the plan to award both the 2024 and 2028 summer showpiece events together, but the recommendation was to be ratified by votes in the meeting - in which both Paris and Los Angeles presented their bids to the IOC. But after LA's announcement, Paris is all set to host the 2024 Games, which will mark the centenary of the last time it hosted the event in 1924.

"I am proud to announce the Olympic Games are coming back to the United States of America," Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said at a ceremony at the StubHub Center stadium, reported AFP.

"In 2028, we are bringing the Games back to LA, one of the great capitals of the Olympic movement. A city that has always been a Games changer and will be again in 2028," he further added.

Yesterday, after Los Angeles’ announcement it has become a win-win-win situation for both cities and the Olympic movement, particularly at a time when interest in hosting the Olympics has faded due to its vast expanses.

With the reforms of Olympic Agenda 2020, both Los Angeles and Paris are planning to use a record number of existing and temporary venues, which will be a first in Olympic history and a move designed to cut costs and boost sustainability.

The double awarding is not be the first occasion in the history of the Games though, as the IOC awarded the 1924 and 1928 Summer Games to Paris and Amsterdam respectively as well as later promising Los Angeles the 1932 Games.

Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, had pushed for the joint awarding as the world, and Europe in particular, struggled to rebuild after the devastating First World War.
