Vijay Sharma insists Mirabai Chanu should withdraw from Asian Games

Coach Vijay Sharma has insisted on Mirabai Chanu pulling out of the Asian Games for Olympic qualifiers scheduled for later this year. Chanu has undiagnosed lower-back problems and Sharma has pushed for full recuperation for the Olympic qualifiers over participating in the Asian Games in Jakarta.

Sharma believes Chanu' participation in the Asian Games put her at risk participating of missing out on the Olympic qualification. She has not even started her proper Weightlifting training with just over 10 days for the Games to start.

“I have submitted a report to the federation. Now they have to take a decision. I am of the opinion that in such less time it's not good to take heavy load. The Olympic qualifiers event is approaching and that is more important than the Asian Games," Sharma told PTI.

Mirabai’s condition eventually improved last week and she moved to Mumbai to start working on her mobility and training. She has once again complained of a little pain after starting her training.

Sharma is speculative that she may worsen her injury if she puts undue pressure on her and probably will be incapable of participating in the World Championship in Ashgabat from November 1, which will be the first event for Olympic qualification this year.

“She is in constant touch with the federation. She was okay but felt slight pain yesterday in training. She stopped training but has resumed it again today," he said.

“It is a rare problem, the doctors say there might be small tear in the ligament. That is why the MRI's and CT scans are coming clean," Sharma added.

IWF secretary Sahdev Yadav announced that the final results on her doubtful participation will be made by Thursday. As the Commonwealth Games champion, her lack of participation will be a blow for India's Asian Games contingent.
