Gymnastics World Cup | Dipa Karmakar makes vault final; Aruna Reddy suffers injury

India’s premier gymnast, Dipa Karmakar, who is making a comeback from a nasty injury she suffered almost a year ago has impressed at the ongoing Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in in Cottbus, Germany. Karmakar recently recorded a score of 14.100 as she finished sixth in the qualification event and secured a spot in the finals of the vault event.

Dipa, who endured a difficult outing during her recent Asian Games campaign, will look to bag a medal at the ongoing competition to end the year on a high note. Meanwhile, Dipa’s teammate - Aruna Reddy, suffered a nasty knee injury during the first vault and was subsequently ruled out of the competition.

"Aruna was going to perform a higher difficulty vault. In warm up, she was confident but unfortunately during the competition, her landing was little early and it hurt her knee. So she didn’t perform the second vault. She is going for MRI today," Riyaz Ahmed Bhati told PTI.

Amongst the men in the Indian contingent, Rakesh Patra recorded a score of 14.000 points on the Rings and finished in 14th place out of 29 gymnasts, while compatriot Ashish couldn't produce his best as he ended in the 24th spot out of 37 gymnasts with a score of 13.200.

The second day of the competition will see Dipa on Beam, Rakesh on Parallel Bars and Ashish on Vault. The Cottbus event is part of an eight-event qualifying system for the 2020 Olympics under which the gymnasts will make the cut based on the their top three scores.
