Ultimate Table Tennis | Mavericks defeat the brave Maharashtra United 11-10

A thriller of a match between RP-SG Mavericks and a valiant Maharashtra United ended with the former emerging as a narrow winner by a margin of 11-10 today. Maharashtra United put up a strong fight after losing three consecutive games only for the Mavericks to win it at the death.

The RP-SG United entered tie of the Ultimate Table Tennis as the top-ranked team in the table and a spirited Maharashtra United side were searching for a win to put pressure on the leaders. And what a match it turned out to be as the Mavericks edged out winners against Maharashtra with a scoreline of 11-10. Ayhika Mukherjee was the star on the night as she caused a major upset by beating higher ranked Lily Zhang 2-1 (10-11, 11-5, 11-10).

Mavericks’ Kou Lei and United’s Amalraj Anthony were up against each other in the next match and it was the Ukranian Kou Lie who quelled Anthony Amalraj's challenge 2-1. The result meant that the Mavericks went up 4-2 after the with the win. The mixed pair of captain Harmeet Desai and Doo Hoi Kem ensured that the Mavericks won the first three matches to put them in a commanding 6-3 position.

But then it all changed. The Maharashtra United side staged a brilliant comeback through their foreign players who turned the tables in their favour and gained a 10-8 lead. Kristian Karlsson, Elizabeta Samara and captain Joao Monteiro won their respective single games to ensure three victories in succession for Maharashtra.

But it was not to be as German TT player Sabine Winter tilted the scales in favour of the Mavericks by winning the last match of the day against Madhurika Patkar 3-0 (11-7, 11-9, 11-10). The final point was decided on a Golden Point as Sabine’s topspin winner got her the crucial point and won Mavericks the tie.
