UTT 2019 | Manav Thakkar inspires U Mumba to edge past Kolkata

Manav Thakkar starred for U Mumba in their comprehensive 9-6 victory over Mavericks Kolkata in the Ultimate Table Tennis third season in New Delhi on Thursday. The top performer of the day was Sutirtha Mukherjee who got the better of star paddler Manika Batra 2-1 to make it easier for her side.

Manav Thakkar played in the mixed doubles and reverse singles clashes on Thursday and that was enough to get U Mumba over the line. Thakkar started his day alongside world no.11 Doo Hoi Kem when Mumba were down 2-4. And their three-point victory in that clash made a huge difference.   

It wasn’t easy though as they were trailing 0-7 in the first set before they turned the tables to take it to the golden point and win it. They won the next two sets In the next two sets against Sanil Shetty and Matilda Ekholm 11-6, 11-7.

After Thakkar got the better of Sanil Shetty in the men’s reverse singles encounter 2-1, Sutirtha Mukherjee did one better to stun Manika Batra 2-1 and hand her side a massive win.

Kolkata had started off well with Sweden’s Matilda shocking Hong Kong’s Doo Hoi Kem 2-1 while German paddler Benedikt Duda consolidated the Mavericks' score with a 1-2 loss against Kirill Gerassimenko.

Women’s Singles: Doo Hoi Kem lost to Matilda Ekholm 1-2 (5-11, 11-3, 8-11)

Men’s Singles: Kirill Gerassimenko lost to Benedikt Duda 1-2 (10-11, 11-10, 7-11)

Mixed Doubles: Manav Thakkar/ Doo Hoi Kem bt Sanil Shetty/ Matilda Ekholm 3-0 (11-10, 11-6, 11-7)

Men’s Singles: Manav Thakkar bt Sanil Shetty 2-1 (11-8, 11-9, 10-11)

Women’s Singles: Sutirtha Mukherjee bt Manika Batra 2-1 (11-7, 11-7, 1-11)
