The third edition of the Ultimate Table Tennis started on a thrilling note as Purneri Paltan registered a stupendous one-point win over Dabang Delhi as Gnansekaran Sathiyan’s heroics went in vain. However, it was Germany’s Sabine Winter who showed nerves of steel to take the Paltan over the rope.

Sathiyan came into the tournament as India’s top-ranked paddler and the main attraction. And he lived up to the billing as well as he defeated Harmeet Desai first in the men’s singles before pairing up with Bernadette Szocs to win the mixed doubles matches to clinch five points. However, even that wasn’t enough as Paltan won both their women’s singles ties and the second men’s singles.

The Commonwealth Game gold medalist, Ayhika Mukherjee started her UTT campaign in a strong manner as she defeated Krittwika Sinha Roy comfortably by picking three points in the first match. A purple patch of 4-6 and 9-10 was followed by her saving the golden point and won one more to take the game.

The second game saw her in full flow as she jumped to a 6-2 lead while the third game was a tricky one. Krittwika took her to the golden point once again before Ayhika held her nerve to win all the points.

What this close win did was it helped the tie to get to the last match of the day with the overall scores tied 6-6. And Paltan’s Winter eased past Romania’s Bernadette Szocs 2-1 to clinch the crucial extra point.
