Raipur Rangers demolish Mumbai Tennis Masters in Champions Tennis League

Mumbai Tennis Masters suffered two defeats in two days as Raipur Rangers defeated the hosts 23-14 to win their opening match at the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association stadium in Mumbai. Raipur Rangers won all the ties other than the legends’ one to make a memorable debut.

In the CTL format, the final result is decided upon the basis of the aggregate score of the five-match tie. The five matches are in the category of Legends (Singles), Mixed Doubles, Women's Singles, Men's Doubles and Men's Singles. Each tie also consists of five sets.

In the legends’ match, former Dutch player Richard Krajicek won the tie 5-3 for Mumbai Tennis Masters against former World No. 1 Thomas Muster of Raipur Rangers.

In the women’s singles, US Open Champion Flavia Pennetta was destroyed by Alize Cornet 5-2 to take Raipur into 8-7 lead. In the mixed doubles tie, Roberto Bautista and Alize Cornet teamed up to increase the lead of Raipur Rangers by defeating Santiago Giraldo and Flavia Pennetta 5-3. At the end of the third tie, Raipur Rangers were leading 13-10 against Mumbai Tennis Masters.

Roberto Bautista and Ramkumar Ramanathan increased the lead for Raipur Rangers after defeating Santiago Giraldo and Sriram Balaji 5-2 in the men’s doubles tie. Going into the last tie between the men’s singles player, Raipur Rangers were leading the match 18-12.

In the men’s singles tie, Roberto Bautista defeated Colombian Santiago Giraldo 5-2 to finish off Mumbai Tennis Masters.

The tournament now moves on to Chennai, where V Chennai Warriors will take on Hyderabad Aces in their opening match at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Chennai.
