Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza won the opening match of the Tennis Masters 7-5, 7-5 beating Leander Paes and Martina Navratilova at Kolkata on Wednesday. The three- match exhibition series is organised as a prelude to the upcoming IPTL 2015.

A 59-year old Martina Navratilova stole the show at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, with her classic play against younger players like Mirza and Bhupathi. Paes and Navratilova  led the first set 3-0 before squandering the set to Mirza and Bhupathi.

"I think doubles is more fun than singles because here you can talk to somebody in the middle of the match but if you talk to yourself in singles people will think whether you're mad! Hope I keep on improving... I can still improve," said Navratilova at the end of the first set, reported PTI.

In the second set, both teams displayed some wonderful tennis to break each other in the opening games. Paes and Martina went ahead to 4-2, after the games were tied at 2-2. In a repeat of the first set, Bhupathi and Mirza came back to win the set 7-5.

Sania Mirza thanked the crowd at the Netaji Indoor stadium for their support throughout the match. "Thank you to the crowd for coming out in large numbers. I am coming here after nine years. It's great to play in front of you. Kolkata we will be back," Mirza said, reported PTI.

The exhibition series now moves on to Hyderabad, where the legendary pairs will take on each other at the Sania Mirza Tennis Academy today.
