Roger Federer withdraws from French Open
World #3 Roger Federer has withdrawn from this year’s French Open owing to recurrent injuries that have seen him participate in only one tournament since February. The 35-year-old legend, who had suffered from knee and back injuries in the past months, pulled out with a view of extending his career.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Federer made the announcement citing fitness issues.
Federer had earlier suffered a knee injury, immediately after the Australian Open, requiring him to undergo surgery. The mishap occurred while the Swiss player was attending his daughters and that injury kept him out for most of the clay season.
Just when news of him recovering started to pour in, he pulled out of the Madrid Masters earlier this month, this time with a back injury. On his return at the Rome Masters, he lost in straight sets to Austrian starlet Dominic Thiem, in a match where he never looked at a 100%, and thus the decision to skip the French Open doesn’t come as a surprise. The 17-time Slam winner can now regain his fitness and concentrate on the upcoming grass-court season.
