Andy Murray marks No 1 world ranking with maiden Paris Masters title
Andy Murray celebrated his world top-ranking by winning the Paris Masters for the first time in his career. The Olympic gold medallist defeated American John Isner by 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4 in the final to clinch his 14th career masters tournament and the sixth ATP title of the year.
Displaying tremendous resilience and power-hitting, Murray dominated Isner from the start. The Scot had won six of his eight previous tournaments since losing the French Open final, and extended his win-loss record over the American to 8-0.
After double-faulting in the opening game, Murray came back strongly by breaking for a 4-2 lead, and although Murray only managed six points on his opponent's serve in the set, it was enough to clinch it in 35 minutes.
The unseeded American showed increasing deftness at the net to push the second set into the tiebreak, and went up 4-2 when Murray double-faulted before closing it out with a fantastic forehand.
Murray bounced back to clinch the decider to cap the feat of becoming the first Briton to achieve the world No 1 since the introduction of the computerised ranking system by the ATP.
Murray will head to the season-ending World Tour Finals as top seed for the first time. However, dethroned Novak Djokovic can reclaim the No 1 ranking if he wins every game to clinch the Tour Finals.
