Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova cut her hair and burst into tears before saving a match point to beat defending champion and Polish world No 3 Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 in the round-robin league at the WTA Finals in Singapore on Monday.

Spectators at the prestigious year-end championships were left stunned when the world No 9 cut a large chunk of her ponytail early in the deciding set after asking the umpire to get her a pair of scissors, and tossed the loose strands onto her seat.

In chopping her hair, it appeared as if a weight had been lifted, although she later explained that the flowing ponytail was bothering her.

“It was bothering me a lot. I was trying to put it behind my headband, but my hair is very thick and heavy,” she told a news conference, “When I was hitting the forehands every time I would hit a good shot... it would hit my eye every time and I had struggle.”
