Australian Open | Sania Mirza through to Australian Open mixed doubles final
Sania Mirza and her Croatian team-mate Ivan Dodig have reached the mixed doubles final of the Australian Open after a 6-4, 2-6,10-5 win over the all-Australian team of Sam Groth and Samantha Stosur today. The Indo-Croat pair will face the winners of the Svitolina-Guccione and Spears-Cabal match.
The Indian got off to a terrific start in the match that saw the Australians committing three double faults to go a break down in the very first game. However, they recovered to level things up in the next game much to the excitement of the crowd. The home team then took a lead as they broke again to take a lead of 4-2. Mirza and Dodig, however, won the next three games in a row to take a lead of their own and eventually closed out the first set at 6-4.
The second set proved to be much more one-sided with Groth and Stosur winning the 91% of their first serve points and converting two out of the five break point opportunities. In a tame effort by the Indo-Croat pair, they conceded the second set by a score of 2-6.
In the super tie-breaker, with the scores level at 3-3, Mirza and Dodig dug deep and won the next five points in a row to take a comfortable 8-3 lead. The Australians tried to fight back but ended up losing 10-5.
This is the first time in four years that Mirza has been able to make it into the final of the Australian Open mixed doubles after being ousted in the semi-finals on the last two occasions.
