Andre Agassi, Novak Djokovic bring curtains down to their partnership : Reports
Andre Agassi, who had joined Novak Djokovic as a part-time mentor last year, has reportedly parted ways after a year of partnership. Talking about the decision, Agassi stated that the disagreement over various matters led to the end of the partnership between the two all-time greats of the game.
The legendary American ace teamed up with Djokovic before the start of the 2017 French Open but then decided to provide “unpaid assistance” for the 2017 Wimbledon as well, where the Serb had to suffer an injury and pulled out midway of the match. However, now Agassi declared that he has ended his association with the 12-time champion.
Speaking to ESPN, Agassi said, “With only the best intentions I tried to help Novak. We far too often found ourselves agreeing to disagree. I wish him only the best moving forward.”
Agassi hoped that he would be a great help in Djokovic getting back to form after his injury that he sustained two seasons ago, but the Serb didn’t get back his old mojo completely and his career has been in tatters at the moment. And now with Agassi leaving the Serb, Djokovic will be mentored by Radek Stepanek.
“I don’t want to sit here and whine about my last couple of years. The truth is that it wasn’t easy. Obviously, I compromised my game and the movement and everything because of the injury. I’m trying to figure things out,” Djokovic said.
Djokovic’s struggle was apparent in the Miami Open and his 16-match unbeaten streak at the tournament ended in a very disappointing manner as he couldn’t even last for an hour and lost the opening round match to Benoit Paire, 6-3, 6-4. The Serb made a comeback to the tennis court at the Australian Open in 2018 and lost the fourth round game to Chung Hyeon. He was also upset two weeks ago at the Indian Wells Masters by qualifier Taro Daniel.
