VIDEO | Organizers 'cut off mic', give champagne to stop Alexander Zverev’s overstretched speech
Everyone reacts differently to victories. While some soak in the accolades and move on with a sense of pride, others cannot control their emotions and find an escape in words. Alexander Zverev is definitely the second kind, whose overstretched victory speech seemed to disrupt ATP’s schedule.
It was a huge moment for the German ace who went on to win the ATP World Tour Finals after beating Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in consecutive matches to achieve the feat. And it was to some extent expected when the World No. 3 started his victory speech by explaining his camaraderie with Djokovic, after it was revealed previously that the Serbian was on the same page with him about his views on the ATP Tour having shorter breaks.
However, what was expected to be a passing mention, went on for over a minute with the German praising Djokovic’s team and following that with thanking his team, his family, his coach and more. All in all, by the time he was in the middle of his victory speech, many would have finished their victory lap and the Nitto ATP organizers finally had to find a way to stop him.
After almost five minutes of talking, the German saw his mic getting disconnected and soon one of the presenters came up to hand him the bottle of champagne. A confused Zverev received it and mentioned that he wasn’t over with his talking yet. The 21-year-old, however, managed to end the tour on a positive note as he won back the crowd that had booed him for stopping his match against Roger Federer midgame.
