Indian Tennis Roundup | Sumit Nagal qualifies for semi-finals of Samarkand Challenger
Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal has made it to the top four of the ongoing Samarkand Challenger tennis tournament as he defeated Spain’s Roberto Ortega-Olmedo in straight sets in the quarter-final on Friday. The Indian will now face Joao Menezes of Brazil in the semifinals on Saturday.
Sumit Nagal asserted dominance from the very beginning of the quarter-final tie against Spaniard Roberto Ortega-Olmedo. The Indian managed to take the match 7-5, 6-4 to cruise into the top four of the tournament which is being played in Uzbekistan. Brazil’s Joao Menezes will be his next opponent in the semi-final battle which will be played on Saturday.
On the other hand, India’s Sriram Balaji and his Israeli partner Jonathan Erlich will also play their semi-final match in the Challenger in Gwangju, Korea today as the match had to be rescheduled from tomorrow.
In a $25,000 ITF women’s event in Singapore, former National Champion Riya Bhatia was knocked out of the championship as she lost 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals to Indonesia’s Beatrice Gumulya.
Meanwhile, Rutuja Bhosale has qualified for the doubles final along with her partner Abigail Tere-Apisah of Papua New Guinea with a fighting 14-12 victory in the super tie-break. They will now take on the top-seeded Indonesian pair of Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies in the summit clash.
India’s Aryan Goveas lost the decider set against Guy Orly Iradukunda of Burundi in the ITF men’s Futures in Uganda.
