Indian wrestlers, Bajrang Punia and Sandeep Tomar have reached the final (gold medal) round in freestyle wrestling at the Yasar Dogu International tournament in Istanbul, Turkey. Their compatriot Vicky, on the other hand, has to settle for a bronze medal in the fifty-seven kg category.

Bajrang, who won a gold at Tbilisi Grand Prix in Georgia on July 5, defeated his Turkish opponent, Mustafa Kaya by technical superiority (15-4) in the 70 kg quarter-finals. He then followed this performance by edging out Iran’s Yones Emamichoghaei (10-10) in the semi-final.

Sandeep, the last Indian wrestler to book a place for the Asian Games this year, defeated his opponents comprehensively to reach the final round. He won the first game against Belarus’ Andreyeu Uladzislau (7-4) and followed it by two victories against Azerbaijan’s Parviz Ibrahimov (3-1) and Hazanzada Mircalal (6-4).

In the 57 kg category, Vicky lost a very close semi-final (5-5) to Belarus’ Dzmichyk Rynchynau as a result of the last point scored by his opponent. He then bagged a bronze medal by overcoming Ukraine’s Armen Arakelian.

On the other hand, four other Indians did not have a great outing as they failed to reach the medal rounds. Amit had to pack his bags after losing his 1/8 bout 1-3 to Iran’s Hassan Moradgholiei in the 65 kg category.

Jitendra started-off well by defeating Ukraine’s Denys Pavlov in the 74 kg category. Unfortunately, the Indian wrestler had to make an exit after losing his quarter-final match (5-7) to Iran’s Saeid Mohammadreza.

Pawan bowed out of the 86 kg category after suffering defeat (0-2) at the hands of Turkey’s Ahmet Bilici in the quarter-finals. His compatriot, Deepak lost Kazakhstan’s Islam Azizov in the 92 kg category.

Another Indian falling at the quarter-final stage was Jashkawar Singh, who lost 0-4 to Ukraine’s Valerii Andriistev. He still had a chance to reach the medal round in the 125 kg category as he waited for Germany’s Nick Matuhin in the repechage round.
