Asian Wrestling Championships | Navjot Kaur wins gold as Sakshi Malik bags bronze

Navjot won the gold in 62Kg freestyle category defeating Japan’s Mia Lamai in a one-sided final of the Asian Wrestling Championship. The final score was 9-1 when the referee blew the hooter, as India got its first gold in the ongoing Championship.

Sakshi Malik won a bronze medal in the 62Kg category as she got the better of Kazakhstan’s Ayaulym Kassymova in a 10-7 brawl. It was a close duel between the two in which Kassymova scored just three points lesser than Sakshi. Both the medals now take India’s medal tally to six consisting of a gold, a silver, and four bronze medals.   

In the final, Navjot, who defeated Mongolia’s Tsevegmed Enkhbayar in the 2-1 semi-final, stole two points that were reverted when her Japanese counterpart challenged referee’s decision. However, Navjot fought back to get those two points from her opponent and gained the lead. 

Till the break, Navjot won three more points and was leading Miya 5-0. She hardly gave a chance of a comeback to Miya as the Japanese could manage just one point. It was 5-1 on the board when Navjot scored two more points to extend the lead and eventually, sealed the victory with a massive score. Mia wasn’t able to score a single point after she was trailing Navjot with only one point in hand.
