Will do our best to keep Junior Asian Championship in India, says Brijbhushan Sharan Singh
After the UWW asked other members to suspend their dealings with India, WFI president Brijbhushan Sharan Singh has now said that the WFI will try its level best to keep the Junior Asian Championship in India. The WFI will write it to the government seeking assurances in this regard.
The United World Wrestling (UWW) has asked various national federations to suspend all their dealings with Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) earlier today. The decision came after the International Olympic Committee stopped all the discussions of hosting sporting events in India after the Pakistani shooters were denied visas during the ISSF Shooting World Cup in Delhi last year.
Meanwhile, the WFI president Brijbhushan has now explained that the wrestling federation will write to the government and try to find out a solution.
"Today we will write to the government of India to find a solution to the matter. Wrestling and wrestlers can't suffer. We are drafting a letter to urge the government to ensure that sports does not suffer," Brijbhushan told PTI.
"We will do our best to ensure that the junior championship remains in India. A solution has to be found. I have not read the UWW directive as yet but whatever it is, no sport should suffer for no fault.”
The Junior Asian Championship is scheduled to be played from July 9 to 16. India was awarded the hosting rights after Lebanon refused to host the event. The Pakistan wrestlers had to wait for a long time to get the visas last year as well when India had hosted the same event.
"Yes, they have temporarily stopped all correspondence with us. They want assurance from the government that there will be no political interference in sporting matters. Let's see what the government decides. We are approaching the government today," said WFI Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar.
"We have hardly four months to put everything in place. We did not bid for it but after Lebanon withdrew, it was offered to us by UWW-Asia. We had agreed to host it but now we can do it only if the government assures that visas will be given to all participating nations. This directive has come to us first because we are hosting this championship. The IOC does not want any political interference, so I will not be surprised if other national federations also get similar treatment from their respective world governing bodies.”
