Mohammad Anas qualifies for Olympics in 400m; India’s contingent crosses 100 for first time

The 21-year-old clocked a timing of 45.40 seconds, the exact qualification mark, to make the cut for the Rio Games. The Keralite shattered his own national record of 45.44 seconds, which he set on the first day of the same competition, to become the 100th Indian to qualify for the Rio Games. With Anas’ qualification, the strength of the Indian track and field contingent also rose to 21.

Anas had a won a silver in the Federation Cup National Athletics Championships in New Delhi in April with a timing of 45.74 seconds.

Arokia Rajiv, who also had a national record of 45.47 seconds, finished with a timing of 45.60 seconds. Earlier, Dutee Chand had qualified for the Olympics from the  in the women’s 100m.
