19-year-old Jisna Mathew secured the second gold medal of the Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Japan after winning the Women’s 400m event with a winning time of 53.26. Apart from Mathew, other Indian athletes were able to add an additional five other bronze medals to the tally.

Running in wet conditions, Mathew, who had a personal best of 52.65, could only manage a time of 53.26. However, the time was good enough to win her the top spot on the podium. Sri Lanka’s Dilshi Kumarasinghe and Taiwan’s Jui-Hsuan Yang finished in second and third place respectively.

In a bizarre 1,500 metres race, where only four players participated, Durga Deore won the bronze medal finishing third behind Hiroka Riyoshi and Tomomi Tomatsu Musenbi.

India’s Sreeshankar also secured a bronze medal at the Games after finishing third in the long jump event with a best jump of 7.47 metres. Japan’s Yugo Sakai won the gold with a time of 7.61 which meant that the Indian, who had a season-best of 7.99, could have taken the top step on the podium.

In the Women’s high jump event, Abhinaya Shetty finished the day with a personal best jump of 1.75 metres which was enough to secure the bronze medal. Participating in the same event, Merly Gracena also set a personal best jump of 1.72m but it could only get her to fifth place in the standings.

Short putter Ashish Bhalothia and 10,000m runner Kartik Kumar also won bronze medals in their respective events to take India’s tally for the day to six.
