CWG silver medalist Amit Panghal bagged the only gold medal for India in boxing as he beat Olympic Champion Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan 3-2 in the finals of the men’s 49kg category at the Asian Games. Vijender Singh and Vikas Krishan were the last Indians to win gold at the Asian showpiece.

Amit Panghal, still aged 22, has certainly announced his arrival in the sport of boxing in the past months. The Haryana-born boxer won the bronze medal at the Asian Boxing Championships at Tashkent last year and followed that up with a stunning silver at this year’s 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth games in the flyweight category.

But the young lad reached a new height today as he beat 2016 Olympic Champion Hasanboy Dusmatov to clinch gold in the final of the men’s 49kg event at the ongoing Asian Games in the cities of Jakarta and Palembang. In doing so, Amit became only the eighth Indian boxer to ever win gold at the Asian showpiece. Amit beat the Uzbek southpaw with a tactical win by a score of 3-2.

The first two rounds saw Amit dominate the fight against his well-decorated opponent. Amit put the Olympic champion Hasanboy in some trouble with his fearless boxing since the start of the match. The open stance of the southpaw from India was extremely effective against his opponent’s attacking tactics. Panghal had a more defensive third round and he seemed to rattle his opponent by what transpired in the first two rounds.

Vijender Singh and Vikas Krishan were the last Indian boxers to win the ultimate prize at the Asian showpiece at the 2010 edition in Guangzhou. The latter had to settle for a bronze medal in the competition this year.
