Long-distance runner Lalita Babar was named the Sports Person of the Year on Monday after a stellar 2015. The current national record holder and Asian champion qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics in the 3000m steeplechase event last year, while also entering the final of the World Championships.

Babar came into the limelight after winning the gold medal at the 2015 Asian Championships in June by clocking a timing of 9:34.13. On her way to the yellow metal, Babar also broke her own personal record, the national record and the games record.

Within a gap of two months, the 2014 Asian Games silver medallist once again broke the national record, this time at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. She also became the first Indian woman to qualify for the steeplechase final with her timing, but, unfortunately, finished eighth in the final.

Organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) with the support of the sports ministry, the India Sports Awards were conferred to the best athletes of the year 2015 on Monday in the capital.

Apart from Babar, gymnast Dipa Karmakar won the Breakthrough Sportsperson of the Year award, while the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India was conferred with the Best National Sports Federation title. The Lifetime Achievement award went to Hockey legend Balbir Singh.a
