Sania Mirza cruises into Miami Open semis
Sania Mirza and Barbora Strycova continued their fine run by easing into the semifinals of the Miami Open with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over the American-Russian pairing of Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova in 64 minutes. After a tight opening set, the Indo-Czech pair cruised through the second.
Mirza and Strycova celebrated the latter’s 31st birthday in style and the Czech told the WTA Insider, "I thought we played pretty good, Even when it was 4-4, we knew we were playing well, so we continued and got better in the second set. By then, we were on a roll.”
Mirza and Strycova broke their opposition in the 9th game and held serve to close out the opening set.
Mirza and Strycova landed 67% of their first serves in the match, as compared to 65% from their opponents. They also converted 74% of the first serves.
"They're obviously very good players. We played them in Sydney, in the semis. We know they've both been around for a long time and have won Slams. Every team in women's doubles is so tough that every team is as good as the next, and with this format, anything can happen. Whoever we play, we have to play our best to win the match," Mirza told a news conference.
Mirza and Strycova hit their full stride in the second set to completely outplayed their opponents and will meet the winners of the clash between Andreja Klepac and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and fifth seeds Martina Hingis and Yun-Jan Chan in the semifinals.
