Dhoni to file 100-crore defamation case against Hindi daily for match-fixing allegations
Three days back, former team India manager Sunil Dev was caught saying in a sting operation by the Hindi daily Sun Star that the India-England Test that was played in Manchester in 2014 was fixed by captain MS Dhoni. In response, the skipper is set to file a defamation case against the daily.
Sunil Dev questioned Dhoni's decision to bat first on a wet pitch in that Test match, which resulted in India losing the game within three days, despite taking the decision to bowl first in a team meeting earlier.
According to a report published
"The said video contains footage of an absolute dubious sting operation of the aforementioned Mr (Sunil) Dev, which in the present circumstances is nothing but a false propaganda initiated by you to defame my client. In fact, the so-called Indian cricket official (Sunil Dev) who you have credited to be the source of information has strongly denied the incident.
"Our client (Mahendra Singh Dhoni) reserves the right to institute proceedings for the recovery of damages up to Rs. 100 crores (1 billion) from you on account of the defamation, mental agony and trauma caused to him due to this by causing loss of his reputation".
Earlier, Justice Mukul Mudgal, who heads the IPL spot-fixing committee, rejected Dev’s claims saying the matter should have been raised before. He also gave the example of India’s decision to bat first and winning the Test at Leeds, where the ball swings similar to Manchester, reported ToI.
Dhoni has been at the center of another legal battle in the past few months. The 34-year-old had drawn a lot of flak for appearing as Lord Vishnu in an advertisement published on the cover of Business Today, back in 2013. The Anantapur High Court issued a non-bailable warrant last month, before eventually withdrawing it, against MS Dhoni, based on a complaint lodged by VHP leader Shyam Sunder.
