Garfield Sobers leads Lord's special tribute to Muhammad Ali

Sobers and Ali had met each other at the Lord’s way back in 1966, when Sobers was part of the touring West Indies cricket team. The heavyweight boxer, who was in London for his second fight with Britain's Henry Cooper, had met with the West Indian cricketer during the Test match at the “Home of Cricket.”

In remembrance of the boxer, the black and white photographs of the meeting between Ali and Sobers in the Lord’s dressing room were displayed on the giant screen in the ground during the lunch interval of the third Test match between England and Sri Lanka. The 79-year-old Sobers then paid tribute to “the Greatest” by ringing the bell before the start of the second session of play.

Muhammad Ali, who died last week after suffering from Parkinson's disease for three decades, was laid to rest yesterday in a private ceremony in his hometown Louisville.
